• Hospital Safety for People with Hearing Loss annual program

 

• Jennifer Phelan, Au.D.: Why eyeglasses are not like hearing aids. 

 

• Pamela Souza, PhD, CCC-A, FAAA, Professor and Chair, Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders Knowles Hearing Center, Northwestern University, discussed the needs of people with severe hearing loss vs mild/moderate hearing loss.

• Jillian Earnest, Au.D. Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center, Veterans Administration 

 

• Cochlear Implant Panel: Our Chapter Members who have a cochlear implant (CI) discussed their personal experience with hearing loss, how they chose a CI, their journey throughout the process, and how their lives have benefited.

 

• Eric LaChance, Doctor of Pharmacy, discussed ototoxicity and the various drugs that can harm your hearing.

 

• Virtual Hearing Technology Fair at which various assistive hearing devices and hearing technology for people with or without hearing aids, such as speech-to-text apps for smartphones and Tinnitus masking, Pocket Talkers, captioned telephones and more, were demonstrated and questions were answered.

 

•  Juliëtte Sterkens, AuD led a lively discussion on hearing loss, various hearing aid features and accessories, and especially the importance of a t-coil and hearing loops.

​

• Northfield Fire and Police Departments discussed emergency preparedness for people unable to hear fire alarms or CO detectors and what to do in other emergency situations.

​

• Dr. Angela Roberts and Dr. Jack Scott requested the audience to offer unique conversation problems they face as a person with hearing loss. Based on their own experience and research they offered suggestions, and demonstrated helpful strategies and technology, to improve your everyday life and how to “repair” conversations.

 

•  Rachel Arfa, JD, an attorney at Equip for Equality, discussed the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990) and current laws protecting those with hearing loss.

​

• Steve Thunder, Acoustical Engineer and specialist in hearing loop technology, explained how a looped room works and links with the t-coil in your hearing aid to give you extremely clear sound.
